Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are simple cosmetic treatments that involve applying a chemical solution mostly an organic acid , to the skin to exfoliate and remove the top layers of skin that consist of mostly dead skin cells.  The new skin that grows back is usually smoother and less wrinkled as the older cells are removed from the skin . Chemical peels can be used to treat various skin issues like acne, acne scars, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation.

Types of Chemical Peels:

  • Superficial Peel (Light Peel): Uses mild acids like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) to gently exfoliate. This peel is mainly used for mild skin discoloration, rough skin, or to refresh the skin. They also help in reducing the acne and inflammation for this purpose , Beta hydroxy acids are preferred. However, all the chemicals help in unclogging pores and thereby reducing the acne.
  • Medium Peel: Uses trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or glycolic acid to reach upto the middle layer of skin. It is effective for treating age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and moderate skin discoloration. These fields are done only by expert dermatologists as it requires sufficient to recognise the correct end point to avoid complications.
  • Deep Peel: Uses stronger acids like phenol and higher concentration of TCA , to deeply penetrate the middle layer of the skin, removing damaged skin cells. This type is used for more severe wrinkles, sun damage, and scars but requires a longer recovery time. These are risky peels in darker skin types. These are carried out in proper medical set up with full facilities to manage the complications.

Benefits:

  • Chemical peels improve the quality of skin,  the texture and tone of the skin.
  • They help in reducing the fine lines, acne scars, and dark spots.
  • They can also help with sun damage and certain types of acne.

Risks and Side Effects:

Chemical fields are relatively safe cosmetic procedures when done by a qualified cosmetic dermatologist. Here are some of the complications that may happen if due precautions are not exercised or if the skin is sensitive and over exfoliated.

  • Redness, dryness, and mild irritation.
  • Swelling, especially with deep peels.
  • Possible scarring or changes in skin color, particularly in people with darker skin.
  • Reactivation of herpes simplex infection- patients should inform their physician if they suffer from cold sores. It can be prevented by giving proper prophylactic antiviral medications.

Aftercare:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure; use sunscreen regularly.
  • Keep the skin moisturized by using adequate moisturiser and avoid picking at peeling skin.
  • Follow your dermatologist’s advice on skincare products and routines post-peel.
